Many people with Hashimoto's are doing everything they have been told to do.

They're taking their thyroid medication.They're trying to eat healthier.They're exercising.They're taking supplements.

Yet they still struggle with stubborn weight gain, fatigue, brain fog, sugar cravings, and difficulty losing weight.

Insulin resistance.

The connection between Hashimoto's and insulin resistance is often overlooked, but it can have a major impact on how you feel and how well your body responds to your healing efforts.

What Is Insulin?

Insulin is a hormone produced by the pancreas. Its job is to help move glucose (sugar) from your bloodstream into your cells, where it can be used for energy.

When everything is working properly, insulin helps maintain stable blood sugar levels.

However, when cells stop responding efficiently to insulin, the body must produce more and more of it to keep blood sugar under control.

This is called insulin resistance.

Over time, high insulin levels can contribute to:

How Hashimoto's Can Contribute to Insulin Resistance

Additionally, when thyroid hormone levels are low or not functioning properly:

  • Cravings for sweets or carbohydrates

  • Afternoon energy crashes

  • Elevated triglycerides

  • High fasting insulin

Even if your fasting glucose is "normal," insulin resistance can still be present.

This is why looking at a more complete picture is important.

Why Thyroid Medication Alone May Not Solve the Problem

Thyroid medication can be life-changing for many people.

However, medication does not automatically correct:

  • Blood sugar imbalances

  • Chronic inflammation

  • Poor sleep

  • Stress overload

  • Gut dysfunction

  • Nutrient deficiencies

If insulin resistance is driving symptoms behind the scenes, simply adjusting thyroid medication may not fully address the problem.

This is one reason many people continue to feel unwell despite having thyroid labs that appear normal.

This combination helps slow blood sugar spikes.

Improve Sleep

Poor sleep can increase insulin resistance within days.

Most adults benefit from 7–9 hours of quality sleep each night.

Manage Stress

Chronic stress increases cortisol, which can contribute to blood sugar dysregulation and inflammation.

Daily stress-reducing practices such as walking, prayer, meditation, breathing exercises, or spending time in nature can be helpful.

Build Muscle

Muscle acts like a storage tank for glucose.

Strength training can significantly improve insulin sensitivity over time.

Support Gut Health

Gut imbalances can contribute to inflammation, which may worsen both Hashimoto's and insulin resistance.

Addressing digestive health is often an important piece of the healing process.
